Essaouira: Water Sports in Essaouira

Essaouira has a 152 km long maritime frontage that offers great opportunities for sport waters’ lovers to come and benefit from the nice weather.

Among the most frequented beaches of the city and its surroundings, we can name:

-          The Essaouira beach;

-          Moulay Bouzerktoun beach;

-          Sidi Kaouki beach;

-          Tafelney beach;

-          Bhibeh beach.

Almost during the whole year, north-east winds blow on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Thus, winds have a constant rate that makes it pleasant to practice water sports in Essaouira, such as: windsurfing, kite surfing, surfing, and body board…

For windsurfing, it’s possible to rent necessary material (boards, clothing…) on the spot.

It’s advised to take some recommendations into consideration:

-          To wear suitable cloths, considering that the water is cooled by the wind;

-          To choose the best timings when winds blow well to practice water sports, which are early in the morning or late in the evening;

-          Not to get very away from the beach, because strong waves and wind can harm the material.

In Essaouira’s beaches, you can also practice fishing, namely:

-          Stick fishing that targets the most common fish of the area: tuna;

-          Traditional fishing, for species such as the mule, the sargue, and sea-breams; and

-          Harpoon fishing for tunas, groupers, and hakes among others. This kind of fishing is practiced near the coast, or in the open sea. It’s easy to get a license for it from local tourist authorities.

All in all, Essaouira isn’t considered as the capital of Moroccan water sports for nothing. It’s a perfect destination that is desired by all surfers, as it’s a quiet place that is not targeted by mass tourism yet.
